About the procedure

01What is a Drainless Day Abdominoplasty (DDA)?

A DDA is a full abdominoplasty — removal of excess skin, tightening of the abdominal muscles, and contouring with liposuction — performed as a day procedure without post-operative drains. Tissue Fixation Sutures (TFS) close the space beneath the skin where fluid would otherwise collect, making drains unnecessary. Patients go home the same day under appropriate supervision.

02How is this different from a standard tummy tuck?

Traditional abdominoplasty typically involves an overnight hospital stay, surgical drains that patients manage at home for one to two weeks, and a painful first week of recovery. The DDA eliminates drains entirely, uses a long-acting local anaesthetic nerve block to significantly reduce post-operative pain, and is performed as a day procedure.

03Is liposuction included?

Yes. Liposuction is routinely combined with the DDA to improve abdominal contour and shape. It is performed safely as part of the same day procedure using the DDA technique.

04Can breast surgery be combined with a DDA?

Yes. It is common for Dr Linsell to combine breast surgery — including augmentation, lift, or reduction — with the DDA, all performed as a single day procedure. This is assessed individually at consultation.

05What are Tissue Fixation Sutures?

Tissue Fixation Sutures are internal sutures placed beneath the abdominal skin to anchor it to the underlying tissue. This eliminates the dead space where fluid would otherwise accumulate — removing the need for surgical drains and reducing post-operative swelling and discomfort.

06What is Renuvion and why is it included?

Renuvion is a device that delivers helium plasma energy beneath the skin to promote skin tightening and tissue contraction. It is included in all DDA procedures to enhance the quality and longevity of results.

Safety and suitability

Is it safe to have a tummy tuck as a day procedure?

The DDA technique was specifically developed to make abdominoplasty safe as a day procedure. Dr Linsell operates in accredited medical facilities with an experienced anaesthetist. The absence of drains, the use of long-acting local anaesthetic, and carefully calibrated post-operative medication mean most patients are more comfortable recovering at home than in a hospital environment. All surgical procedures carry risk, and these are discussed in full at consultation.

What is a seroma, and will I get one?

A seroma is an accumulation of fluid beneath the skin — the most common complication of traditional abdominoplasty, occurring in up to 30% of cases with standard techniques. The DDA technique directly addresses this by using Tissue Fixation Sutures (TFS) to close the space where fluid would otherwise collect. While no surgical technique eliminates all risk, the DDA approach is specifically designed to reduce seroma incidence.

Am I a suitable candidate?

Suitability depends on your overall health, BMI, skin quality, abdominal anatomy, and medical history. For anaesthesia safety, Dr Linsell’s maximum BMI is 30. The best way to determine suitability is a personal consultation. Dr Linsell will give you an honest assessment — including if this procedure is not right for you.

What are the risks of abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty is major surgery. Risks include seroma, infection, wound healing complications, scarring, changes in skin sensation, deep vein thrombosis, and anaesthetic risks. These risks are discussed in detail at consultation and are outlined on our risks page. Dr Linsell will not proceed with surgery until he is satisfied you understand and accept these risks.

Do I need to stop smoking before surgery?

Yes. Smoking significantly impairs wound healing and increases the risk of serious complications following abdominoplasty. You will be required to cease smoking at least 4 weeks prior to the procedure. This will be discussed in detail at your consultation.

Recovery

01
How long until I can drive?

Most patients are advised not to drive for approximately one to two weeks post-operatively, or while taking prescription pain medication. Your specific timeline will be discussed at your post-operative review.

When can I return to work?

This depends on the nature of your work. Desk-based or sedentary roles may be possible from two weeks. Physically demanding roles require longer. Dr Linsell will give you a specific guide based on your job and your individual recovery.

When can I lift and care for young children?

Lifting restrictions apply for the first four to six weeks. You will need a support person at home during the early recovery period. Planning for childcare assistance in the first two weeks is strongly recommended.

When can I exercise again?

Light walking is encouraged from the first week. More vigorous exercise, including core work, is typically introduced gradually from six weeks. A specific return-to-exercise plan is discussed at follow-up.

Will I have drains to manage at home?

No. The absence of post-operative drains is one of the defining features of the DDA. You will go home without drains, without drain care instructions, and without the discomfort and inconvenience that drains involve.

What support do I have after I go home?

You will have 24/7 direct access to Dr Linsell and his team. Post-operative medications are supplied in a Webster pack so there is no confusion about what to take and when. Follow-up consultations are scheduled at one week, one month, three months, and twelve months, either in person or via Zoom. You are never left to navigate recovery alone.

Cost and the package

What does the package include?

The DDA package is fully inclusive: surgeon, anaesthetist, and hospital fees; limousine transfers to and from the airport and hospital; accommodation at the InterContinental Sydney Double Bay; all post-operative garments; all medications in a Webster pack; hyperbaric oxygen therapy; lymphatic drainage; and all follow-up consultations including 12-month in person or Zoom reviews. There are no hidden costs.

How much does it cost?

For Australian patients, the DDA alone ranges from $30,000 to $50,000 AUD. DDA with breast surgery ranges from $50,000 to $70,000 AUD. The variation reflects case complexity and whether a Medicare Item number applies. All prices are for the complete inclusive package. The exact cost is determined at consultation.

Does private health insurance cover any of the cost?

Private health insurance may contribute to costs where a Medicare Item number is applicable — for example, where diastasis recti (abdominal muscle separation) meets clinical criteria. This is assessed individually. Our team can assist you in understanding what your policy may cover prior to consultation.

Why does the DDA cost more than some other practices?

The package price reflects a fully inclusive experience: a specialist plastic surgeon with 35 years of experience, an internationally recognised technique, accredited facilities, luxury accommodation, and comprehensive follow-up care over 12 months. You are not paying for a procedure — you are paying for a complete surgical journey with direct, ongoing access to your surgeon.

Logistics and travel

I live interstate — how does this work?

Many of Dr Linsell’s patients travel from interstate. An initial consultation can be conducted via Zoom. You will travel to Sydney for pre-operative assessment, surgery, and your Day 1 and Day 3 reviews. Australian patients typically return home on Day 4. All transfers, accommodation, and logistics are coordinated as part of the package.

Do you treat international patients?

Yes. International patients are welcome and are supported with an extended package. International patients typically remain in Sydney for seven days before returning home, with all logistics managed as part of the package.

Where is the surgery performed?

Surgery is performed at a fully accredited hospital in Sydney. Dr Linsell’s clinic, for pre and post operative review, is located at Suite 10, 17–19 Knox Street, Double Bay NSW 2028.

Do I need someone to accompany me?

Yes. You will need a responsible adult to accompany you home on the day of surgery and to remain with you on the night of surgery and Day 1. For interstate and international patients, a support person is strongly recommended for the duration of the stay.

Yes. An initial Zoom consultation is available for interstate and international patients. A formal in-person assessment is required before surgery is confirmed.
